Naykuna Studios

This project was an outcome from the second year of my degree. It is a speculative bio design concept inspired by three different design precdents. These included Keel Labs, Alex Westerlund and Indus. The design principles included; ecological integrity and temporality and impermanence. This concept was, furthermore, inspired by First Nations people’s connection to country and use of seaweed in their Ancient practices. The concept proposed using the invasive kelp species, Caulerpa Taxifolia, located off the east coast of Australia as a resource for algi yarn to be used in the speculative brand, Naykuna Studios. Its name was inspired by the First Nations word ‘Naykuna’, meaning calm water.  The brand would provide timeless and unique beachwear reflective of kelp itself. Each piece of clothing would be 100% biodegradable with the intention of being returned to the sea at their end of use phase, ensuring brand circularity.
